Price leads Nationwide Gretzky Classic after rollercoaster first round

Nationwide Tour CanadaAustralian Aron Price posted a solid 7-under 65 at the par-72 Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay Thursday to move into the first-round lead at the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung, a first-year event on the Nationwide Tour.Price’s roller-coaster of a round consisted of birdies at Nos. 1, 6, 7, 13 and 14 and eagles at the par-5 third and 10th holes — offset only by bogeys at Nos. 3 and 10. In the end it led to a one-stroke lead over eight players — including 2008 Henrico County Open winner Greg Chalmers (65/Georgian Bay Golf Club) and 1998 Greater Greensboro Classic winner Trevor Dodds (66/Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay).

“I’m not the most accurate driver out there, but I did hit my fair share of fairways today,” said Price, who hit seven of 13 on the day. “To sum it up from there, I chipped in once (for eagle on the 16th hole) and made two 30-foot putts (one for eagle on No. 4 and one for birdie on No. 7). That is how you turn a 68 into a 65.”
